The C9 chord is a
C dominant 7th chord (C7
chord), with a major ninth added on top.
The intervals of the C9 chord are the
root (C) ,
major third (E) ,
perfect fifth (G) ,
minor seventh (B♭) and
major ninth (D) .
Dominant 9th chords are 5-note chords and the 9th falls on the next octave.
That means that they can often be impractical to play unmodified. For this
reason, the 9th is often played at the 2nd scale degree position instead.
